Dreaming is not all that easy. And also and equally true is that dreaming is the easiest part.
Chasing dreams is work.
Is that discouraging that I said that? Do not let it be.
Admitting the truth is actually quite freeing, especially in a society that constantly beats the drum of do what you love and follow your dreams and has inundated us with memes about just how necessary passion is for a happy life. It is not that these are wrong. All are true or mostly true. It is more the idea that if you do not have this that you are doing it wrong.
This is what is deflating.
Because for some people, actually quite a lot, figuring out what their dream is is The Work. And I fear when the reality of the difficulty bumps up against the rah-rah, happy-happy of what we have been sold, people get discouraged and quit searching for their dream.
They do not know if they want to write a book, or have another kid.
Backpack across Europe after graduation, or immediately start law school.
Be a lawyer, or a magician.
Go for the big payday, or follow their passion.
So they think this passion-pursuing, dream-chasing, BHAG-chasing life must not be for them, or else they’d know what it was.
The point is not knowing is okay. It is actually great. Because when we do not know we are more willing to ask questions and listen to various opinions. Not knowing what our Big D Dream is has just as much potential as knowing because, as Shel Silverstein once famously noted, anything is possible. Anything can be.
The key, of course, is not to get stuck here or stay too long in this not knowing or in the knowing but not acting. Because having a dream is a blueprint, the pursuit is work. Hard work. It is waking up every day and doing something to get that dream closer to reality. It is not quitting when things get hard, or when failure inevitably happens. It is believing in the dream even when the edges get fuzzy.
Yes, the dream is the easy part.
And it is not that easy at all.
Do not let this discourage you, let it inspire you.
Your dream is in there. You only need to pursue it. Your dream is achievable. You only need to start doing the work.
